NEW DELHI: A priest has been arrested for raping a five-year-old girl at a temple in Bhalswa Dairy, northwest Delhi.
Though the incident took place on Monday, the child revealed the matter to her mother two days later, following which the accused was nabbed on Wednesday.
Police said the 45-year-old accused, Rajesh Shukla, was known to the victim's family. The child, along with her family members, had gone to Ram Janki Mandir in Mukundpur on Monday.
"While the rest of the family members returned home, the child stayed back to play with other kids near the temple. She too returned home within an hour or two. Initially, everything seemed normal. However, the girl narrated the incident before her mother two days later," said a senior police officer.
According to the child's statement, Shukla took her to his room on the temple premises and sexually assaulted her. He then dropped her at the temple's gate, asking her to go home and not to disclose the matter to anyone. Shukla had apparently threatened the child that he would harm her family if she divulged anything, police said.
Later, the family informed the police. "A case was registered under Section 376 of IPC ( rape ) and relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A raid was conducted and the accused arrested from the same temple where he lived. Shukla, who belongs to a village in UP, was produced before a court, which remanded him in 14 days' judicial custody.
