Malaysia has urged police in the UK to share information on British child sex abuser Richard Huckle, who investigators believe abused up to 200 young victims in Kuala Lumpur.
Huckle, 30, a photographer from Ashford, Kent, is facing multiple life sentences after he pleaded guilty to 71 offences against Malaysian children aged between six months and 13 years from 2006 to 2014.
Ong Chin Lan, assistant director at the Royal Malaysian police’s sexual, women and child investigation division, said the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) had informed its Malaysian counterparts about the case only a month ago.
“We have asked for the information repeatedly and will continue to press them for more information for follow-up action,” she was quoted as saying by the state-run Bernama news agency.
“So far, the victims have not been identified and the NCA only informed us about the incident about one month ago.”
Arrested at Gatwick airport by NCA officials when he returned home for Christmas in 2014, Huckle initially pleaded not guilty to all 91 charges, then gradually admitted 71 counts.
He posed as a Christian philanthropist and teacher to gain access to children in impoverished communities in the Malaysian capital.
Malaysian police hope information from his case could help them launch their own investigations. The NCA found more than 20,000 images on his computer of boys and girls.
The NCA shares intelligence abroad on a police-to-police basis and also conducts training for law enforcement in south-east Asia. The agency told the Guardian in May that 28 British sex offenders had been refused entry when they tried to travel abroad following intelligence sharing.
Malaysia has reacted with shock to the revelations that Huckle exploited the impoverished communities he lived in to groom and abuse Malaysian children.
Daily newspaper the Star had ran the headline: “This monster defiled our kids”. It also published a story titled: “The devil that hid in a church”.
The government has set up a hotline for the victims and also urged people with information on Huckle to contact them. The education ministry released a statement saying the Briton was never part of a government-run programme.
Huckle’s sentence hearing is expected to be concluded on Friday. UK legislation allows a British suspect to be charged for crimes abroad.
The court was told that Huckle’s abuse started when he was 19 and on a gap year, teaching in south-east Asia. He boasted about his crimes on the hidden “dark web” and compiled a 60-page manual, “Paedophiles and Poverty: Child Love Guide”, on how to select victims and avoid detection. He wanted to create a “Paedo Wiki guide”, the court heard.
His laptop also contained a “Paedopoints” ledger, awarding himself points for 15 different levels of depravity on children, which he rated from “basic” to “hardcore”.
