The brutal rape, mutilation, and murder of the Std IX student at Khopardi village of Ahmednagar district on July 14 would have gone largely unnoticed but for the monsoon session of the state legislature that begins on Monday.
On Sunday at a press conference, the Opposition used the incident to attack chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who, they said, as home minister failed to take cognizance of the incident.
"One of the culprits was caught two days after the incident. Neither Fadnavis nor the minister of state for home or even the guardian minister has visited the victim's family though it is three days since the incident." The Opposition said the state must have a separate minister for the home department.
Opposition leader in the legislative assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said, on July 14, the minor girl was raped, her hands and legs chopped off and her naked torso was thrown outside her home. Her clothes were found hanging from a tree.
State Director General of Police Pravin Dixit in a press release on Sunday said three accused have been arrested. These include Jeetendra Shinde, Santosh Bhawal and Nitin Bhailume. The opposition has alleged that the accused Bhawal is close to BJP leaders and there may be attempts to protect him. Bhawal's Facebook profile picture is with cabinet minister Ram Shinde who is the district guardian minister.
Opposition leader in the council Dhananjay Munde demanded that the case be tried by a fast-track court and the accused be hanged. The issue will be raised in the House on Monday.
