With the arrest of the accused, the Manickpur police has solved one case of sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. The accused is believed to have sexually abused a few more girls.
The suspect originally from West Bengal who does odd jobs and lives on the streets of Vasai used to target minor girls on Saturdays and Sundays. His modus operandi was to target girls in their building staircases. He would threaten them with a blade and take them to the building terrace and sexually abuse them. He would then rob them of their valuables and cellphones.
On August 7, a 14-year-old class ninth student was raped by an unknown man in the terrace of her building at around 8.40 pm. The girl was returning home from the shop. In the staircase, the accused threatened her with a blade and dragged her to the terrace. He raped her and fled. He took away her cellphone. The girl narrated the abuse to her mother who filed a complaint with the Manickpur police.
The girl provided sketchy details about the accused to the police as it was dark and she couldnt see him. Based on the description the police launched a search. During the search, it turned out that a few more cases of girls being sexually abused on weekends came to light. In those cases no police complaints were filed.
The police in plainclothes began keeping a vigil in these localities over the weekend. On Sunday, the police found the accused roaming in a locality in Manickpur. His description matched with that of the suspect they were looking for. He confessed to the crime. The girl too identified the accused. He was arrested on Monday and produced before the Vasai court. He has been remanded to police custody till September 3.
