Rape, murder of Jisha

Students of Kerala University protest against the rape and murder of Perumbavoor native Jisha at Thiruvananthapuram
Kerala Police on Saturday submitted the chargesheet in the rape and murder of Jisha, a Dalit law student.

In the chargesheet, submitted in Ernakulam district court, police have named Amirul Islam, 23, a migrant worker from Assam, as the lone accused in the case that rocked Kerala on the eve of the Assembly election in May.
Jisha, 29, who lived with her mother in a hut near Perumbavur in Ernakulam, was found murdered on April 28. Her mother, a daily-wage worker, was not home at the time.
According to the chargesheet, an inebriated Amirul stabbed her multiple times when Jisha resisted his attempt to sexually assault her. Amirul faces charges of murder, rape, trespass, destroying evidence and illegal detention. He has also been booked under relevant Sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The chargesheet says Amirul, who had earlier been booked in a case of bestiality (sexual act with animal), stayed some 500 m from Jisha’s house with other migrant workers. He fled Perumbavur after the crime. A special team nabbed him at Tamil Nadu on June 16. In the chargesheet, police claim to have four sets of DNA evidence against Amirul, apart from deposition of witnesses who saw him leave Jisha’s house after the crime.
