Decomposed bare body of an unmarried young woman, who had gone missing 10 days back, was recovered from a bush near a mango orchard adjacent to Jamirghata railway station
The face of the woman was mutilated with acid, say police officials. They suspect the lady, aged around 21, and identified by her family later, was killed after she was brutally raped. It has been learnt from police sources that the woman, daughter of a silk merchant of Marupur village under Kaliachak police station graduated in humanities stream from Sultanganj College in Kaliachak last year. The spot where the body was recovered from is nearly 15 km from her native village.
Local people say that they had a severe foul smell while crossing the railway tracks this morning. Later, some ladies' garments and a bag were found. “The body was naked. The clothes and the undergarments of the woman were left at least 50 metres away from the body. Only a scarf was found around the neck of the dead woman. The body bore several black burnt-marks. A bag was lying near the body,” a local resident said.
Police officials also say that an ATM card, a few passport size photographs of the woman, a mobile, a few passbooks of banks and forms of recruitment examinations were recovered from the bag. Sheikh, father of the woman said that since she had graduated Asifa was trying to crack the recruitment examinations. She used to go to Kaliachak and Malda in connection with the preparation of those examinations. On 15 October, his daughter went out around 3 pm but did not return. Sheikh lodged a missing complaint the next day.
Arnab Ghosh, the superintendent of police said, “Body of a young woman was recovered from a bush near Jamirghata station today. Police have started investigation into the matter. Whether the woman was raped can be ascertained only after having the autopsy report.”
