KOLKATA: The Salt Lake police on Sunday arrested two 19-year-olds for kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl whom they befriended on Facebook
This Class X student -along with her parents -had lodged a police complaint on December 1. The youngsters named in the FIR were arrested from North 24Parganas' Jagatdal; a Barasat court remanded them to police custody for five days.
According to the FIR, police said, the survivor stated nearly a month ago, she had accepted a friend request on Facebook from a person named Ashutosh. Over the next several days, she had spoken with him on the social-media platform. The youth, according to her, was very insistent on meeting her in person. But the girl told police she consistently avoided it. Finally, it was on November 30, she told in her complaint, that she met him in near a park at Salt Lake CC Block. The youth then told her he wanted to avoid public glare and spent a few moments with her in private. He then asked her to accompany him to Jagatdal. The girl, police said, was reluctant but Ashutosh forced her to accompany him under threat.
When a TOI correspondent reached the girl's residence, the family refused to speak on the matter. In the complaint, the survivor said once she was taken to Jagatdal, a friend of Ashutosh named Shivam, met him and offered keys to his "home" where they could spend some time alone. This home is a nondescript quarter in the Waverly Jute Mills. Once in it, she was physically abused and tormented by the duo. They then dropped her to Chinar Park. She managed to use a cellphone from a passerby and called up her parents. Returning home, she narrated the ordeal to her parents who en couraged her to speak out before the police the day after. This place bore a desolate look on Sunday. Police sources said not only had the victim complied with all the medical formalities, she also testified in-camera before a judicial magistrate under section 164 CrPC.
Police said the duo named in the FIR, however, sensing impending police action, tried to give them a slip. Ashutosh, whose real name is Vivek Thakur and his friend Shivam Pandey, were arrested only after police set up an elaborate trap with a decoy. The duo has told police the girl had met them at Bidhannagar railway station on her own.
Police, however, slapped them with grievous charges. The duo has been accused of kidnapping (IPC sections 363 and 366) and gang-rape (IPC 376D). Cops have also slapped the provisions of POSCO Act 2012 which says any sexual act with children below 18 is a punishable offence with punishment ranging from a decade to a life behind bars.
