JAMSHEDPUR: Police on Saturday detained three villagers in connection with the December 19 rape and killing of a five-year-old girl in Bodam, near here
SP (rural) Shailendra Burnwal said, "After preliminary questioning, we have got some clues. We hope to crack the case in two or three days." He, however, declined to give the details of the three suspects, who belong to the same village as the victim.
The rape and murder of the girl came to light on December 19 when some villagers found a blood-stained sack on a field. "We grew suspicious when we saw a dog with a human limb between its teeth nearby," recalled Bipin Mandal, a villager.
When police personnel opened the sack, they found the mutilated body of a girl, who was missing from home since December 15. During postmortem, doctors confirmed that the girl had been raped before being murdered.
The girl's father said, "My daughter would not have died if police had started looking for her in time." He added, "All we want now is immediate arrest of the culprits."
Police did not rule out the possibility of the girl falling victim to witchcraft. "We are investigating all possible angles, including organ trafficking," said circle inspector Ram Prasad.
