A sex offender described as “paranoid and short-tempered,” who used a hidey-hole guarded by dogs in his kitchen to conceal a girl he was abusing, has been found guilty of sex crimes spanning decades.
Michael Dunn, 57, reportedly created a cavity in a wall behind his fridge and camouflaged it with a false wall, giving himself a hidden space to carry out violent abuse against four “powerless” victims.
One imprisoned runaway girl, who was concealed from police on eight or nine occasions, later killed herself after reporting Dunn’s crimes to the authorities.
The abuser used Alsatian dogs to guard the secret sex dungeon and wired his home with CCTV cameras, alarms, and sensors in case the police came looking for his captives.
Dunn was described in Teesside Crown Court as a “paranoid and short-tempered tormentor who used violence when his sexual demands were not met,” according to the Daily Mail.
On Wednesday, he was convicted of 10 rapes, three charges of false imprisonment, and three charges of indecent assault, while being cleared of one charge of rape, one of making a threat to kill, and one of grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor Richard Bennett said Dunn was a “violent, controlling and sexually abusive man.”
One of his victims was reportedly an underage girl who had already been raped and beaten by another man.
Bennett told the court that Dunn appeared protective and caring at first, but then started making sexual advances.
Although the girl allegedly resisted, he persisted and sexually assaulted her. The prosecutor said Dunn groomed, molested, and raped her when she was a vulnerable child.
The girl, who was imprisoned at his home in Redcar, north Yorkshire, was reportedly punched in the face, chest and stomach and had her throat grabbed by Dunn.
Jurors were told that she was left a ‘bloodied mess’ after he punished her for trying to escape and how the abuse drove her to kill herself.
Dunn’s violent crimes came to the attention of the police when his victim went to the authorities as an adult and made a complaint in 2014.
A second female victim was also beaten and left with black eyes, the prosecution said. She fearfully submitted to sex with him after he threatened to attack her.
Dunn reportedly groomed a third underage girl by giving her alcohol and cigarettes before sexually assaulting her decades ago.
She made a complaint against him, which he denied, and he was not prosecuted at the time, as the allegation went no further.
His fourth victim was reportedly another pre-teen girl, who he raped and told afterwards, “it’s what boyfriends and girlfriends do.
She challenged Dunn when she encountered him years later. He is said to have replied, “I’ll have you done for slander."
Judge Tony Briggs remanded Dunn to custody until sentencing at a later date.
Detective Sergeant Dave Pettrick, Cleveland Police, said: “This was an extremely complex and difficult inquiry which spanned many years and several locations in the UK. I would first of all like to pay tribute to the victims for their bravery and for supporting our investigation, which enabled us to bring Dunn before the courts.
Essentially Dunn groomed several women and young girls, in some cases making them completely dependent on him, and carrying out sexual offences against all of them.
Some of the victims were kept in line through Dunn’s extreme violence or even through the fear of violence and he had complete and absolute control over their lives. He ensured he and his victims evaded the authorities while he continued to abuse and control the women.
Needless to say, all four women are deeply affected by their terrible ordeal. I hope today’s verdict will bring some comfort to them as they attempt to move on with their lives,” he added.

ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- An Ashland man arrested Wednesday on rape charges faces similar charges in Greenup County, Kentucky, court records show.

James Gartin, 53, of Ashland, was charged with two counts of first degree sexual abuse in a 2013 Greenup County case, according to Greenup County Circuit Court information. That charge was later reduced to two counts of unlawful transaction with a minor in the second degree.
In the latest case, Gartin is charged with rape, sodomy and endangering the welfare of a minor.
According to KSP troopers, Gartin became a family friend of the victim to gain access to the child. Troopers say the victim is a girl younger than 12 years old.
"A lot of times when you have someone that commits these acts, they do seek out specific types of people [to get close to their children]," said Trooper Michael Murriell. "It's unfortunate because a lot of times we as a society are very trusting in other people and don't want to think anything bad could happen and a lot of times, unfortunately, something bad does happen."
Troopers say Gartin committed the sexual acts against the girl over an extended period of time.
"We have not been able to establish an exact amount of time, but we are able to make a determination that this has been ongoing and has occurred on more than one occasion," Murriell said.
Gartin was taken to the Big Sandy Detention Center.

WARREN, Ohio - A judge has set bail at $1 million for Cortland man accused of raping a girl from the time when she was as young as 11-years-old until she was fourteen.
Roy Allen III, 47, appeared in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on Friday for arraignment on six rape charges handed up Thursday by the county grand jury.
Allen pleaded not guilty to the charges, four of which carry a sentence of life in prison, if he is convicted.
The suspect was arrested last week after allegations surfaced that he had raped a fourteen-year-old girl.
Bazetta Township Police filed the original charge against Allen after interviewing the alleged victim who told them that he had pressured her to engage in sex with him as recently as January 4.
Investigators say the alleged crimes began in 2014 when the girl was 11-years-old.
Police say they interviewed a relative of Allen who told investigators that during a discussion last July, Allen admitted that he was having sex with what he described as “a little girl”.
Allen remains held in the Trumbull County Jail without bond.

PORT ORCHARD — Her voice breaking when announcing Friday the 145-year sentence for a man convicted of assaulting and raping five of his 12 children, Judge Melissa Hemstreet said she wanted to account for the “horrific” crimes of Melford John Warren Jr.
“It’s my fervent hope that these children never have to think of Mr. Warren again,” Hemstreet said.
Warren, 45, who lived in an “unusual” domestic situation with the children and their two mothers in South Kitsap, was convicted in December by a Superior Court jury of 15 of the 22 crimes he had been charged with, including five counts of first-degree rape of a child.
Warren is believed to have exerted control over the women and children and believed that raping one’s own children was permissible.
He would move frequently after drawing the attention law enforcement and coerced the women and children to lie to police and avoid contact with authorities.
The abuse came to the attention of investigators in August 2015, when Warren’s 14-month-old daughter was taken to the hospital with a broken arm. He had reportedly grown frustrated that the child would not stop crying and threw the child onto an futon.
“That injury may have been a blessing in disguise,” Hemstreet said.
Hemstreet added: “How are these children going to trust in the future when one of the people supposed to protect and provide for them made their lives a living nightmare?”
The two women who lived with Warren were initially charged with criminal mistreatment, and attempted to deny and cover up the abuse. They ultimately testified against Warren at trial and had the charges dismissed. Jurors declined to convict Warren on charges of assaulting the women.
One woman has had her children returned to her from foster care, and the other is working to have custody of the children restored as well. Jurors were told that prosecutors did not have control over whether the women had their children returned.
Warren did not attend his own trial after several courtroom outbursts, and made a brief appearance Friday while strapped to a chair and wearing the red scrubs of a high-security inmate. However, when his attorney asked him to sign a form, he began yelling that he did not recognize the authority of the court and made accusations that his former attorney had been “conveniently” murdered.
“Your rules don’t apply to me,” Warren yelled, appearing thin and unshaven. “The only judge is God almighty.”
Ron Ness, a longtime Kitsap defense attorney, had represented Warren until dying unexpectedly of natural causes in August.
“Mr. Warren, I don’t think it was convenient for anyone,” Hemstreet said of Ness’ death.
Just considering the convictions, Warren’s maximum sentence would have been about 26 years, which Hemstreet called “grossly inadequate.”
However, jurors also convicted Warren of a number of "aggravators," which allowed Hemstreet to exceed the statutory maximum.
Hemstreet also exceeded the request by prosecutors, who asked for 106 years.
Senior Deputy Prosecutor Cami Lewis said she was happy with the sentence.
“I was surprised that she went that high, but pleased,” Lewis said.
Warren’s attorney, Adrian Pimentel, told Hemstreet that the prosecutor’s request amounted to “overkill” and asked for 23 years.
Pimentel told Hemstreet he did not want to minimize what the children endured, but said it was a longer sentence than somebody convicted of first-degree murder and said the state’s request was excessive.
“We have a system in place, sentencing guidelines in place, for reasons,” he said.
Following the sentencing, Pimentel said the case was difficult for all involved, including him.
“This is one of the toughest cases of my life,” he said.
Warren was convicted at trial, and has the right to appeal the case.

FAIRFIELD — A veteran Fairfield police officer’s mistakes and his coworkers’ mismanagement of evidence resulted in the jury trial for an accused child rapist being short-circuited Thursday.

Miguel Pelayo, 38, was starting the third week of his trial for multiple felony charges of child sexual assault. He was arrested late last year after a 17-year-old girl reported that she had been the victim of ongoing sexual assaults and rapes by Pelayo since she was around 5 years old.

Pelayo, who faces spending the rest of his life in prison if convicted of all charges, has been locked up with bail set at more than $3.3 million. He has pleaded not guilty.

A PAEDOPHILE who subjected his young victims to what a judge called “a prolonged and systematic course of sexual abuse”, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
At Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Jeremy Jenkins told 41-year-old Michael McCauley, of Cwmbran, that the sexual abuse and rape he had inflicted would “live with them for the rest of their lives.”
McCauley, found guilty on charges of rape and sexual assault of children aged under 13 after a trial last month, was described in a pre-sentence report as “highly manipulative.”
Judge Jenkins agreed with the report’s conclusion that McCauley poses a high risk of serious sexual harm to children, and called him “a worrying and significant example of a man whose sexual interest in children was paramount in his life.”
McCauley had, he added, shown no remorse, only latterly - during the report’s compilation - accepting what he had done.
“You had no empathy for your victims. You are a dangerous offender,” said Judge Jenkins.
Victims’ statements, describing ongoing “nightmares” due to McCauley’s “disgusting behaviour”, were read by prosecuting counsel Caroline Rees.
McCauley received 18-year extended sentences for two rapes, to run concurrently, comprising 15 years in prison and a further three years on licence. Judge Jenkins told McCauley he will serve at least two-thirds of the 15-year portion before being considered for parole. Three sentences of eight years were imposed for a range of sexual assaults, also to run concurrently.

A Milford man has been charged with raping an 8-year-old boy inside his home in 2009.
Kenneth C. Fenske, 57, of the 2700 block of North Old Bethlehem Pike, was arraigned Friday before District Judge Gary Gambardella on one count of child rape, two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and two counts of unlawful contact with a minor, according to court records.
Each charge against Fenske is graded as a felony of the first degree.
His arrest comes as the result of a joint investigation by Bucks County Detectives and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, court papers show.
According to a criminal complaint, the boy, now a teen, told investigators Fenske raped him several times in 2009 during a series of "furry" parties at Fenske's home.
"Furries" are adults who dress in animal costumes, the complaint says. For some, it is done as part of a sexual fetish.
The boy told police that Fenske, who went by the furry nickname "Lupine" and dressed as a red fox, would remove the costume during the episodes of abuse, the complaint says.
Arrest papers also reference an instance in which the abuse occurred at a "party apartment," but do not provide additional information as to the apartment's location.
The boy told investigators he was the only child present at these parties, and would go dressed as Kellogg's cereal mascot Tony the Tiger, the complaint says. The boy allegedly told investigators that during these parties he would play the video game "Rock Band" for a period of time until Fenske asked him to come upstairs where, in a guest bedroom, the abuse occurred.
A call to a cellphone number listed in the arrest affidavit and associated with Fenske went straight to a voicemail inbox for "Ken Fenske of Anapode Solar and Fensys Ltd." A message left Friday was not immediately returned.
State records list Fenske as owner of both Anapode Solar and Fensys Ltd., with both entities registered to his Old Bethlehem Pike address.
Court records show the district judge set bail at 10 percent of $750,000. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 13.
Fenske is the third man to be charged with abusing the same victim.
David R. Parker, 38, of Stroudsburg, Monroe County, is facing charges in his home county of child rape and related counts, as well as a handful of child pornography charges in a separate case, according to court records.
Jeffery Harvey, 40, of West Wyoming, Luzerne County, faces charges in neighboring Lackawanna County of unlawful contact with a minor, criminal use of a cellphone, involuntary deviate sexual assault and statutory sexual assault, court papers show.
According to arrest papers, Harvey was arrested June 28 when he thought he was meeting a teen boy for sex, but instead was greeted by agents with the attorney general's office.
The complaint says he allowed investigators to search his phone, where they found text conversations between Harvey and Parker about abusing the boy.
Upon his arrest June 29, police say, Parker admitted raping and abusing the boy over a number of years.
Messages left after-hours Friday with attorneys for Harvey and Parker were not immediately returned.
