A man was arrested Monday, Feb. 6, on suspicion of raping a sleeping 74-year-old woman in Mentone last month.
The rape was reported at 9:15 p.m. Jan. 16, at the Friendly Hills Mobile Estates on Mentone Avenue near Crafton Avenue, said San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Yucaipa Station spokeswoman Sherrie O'Connell.
The victim told deputies that she was sleeping in her home and awoke to a man on top of her and choking her, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.
She struggled with the man and was sexually assaulted and injured, the news release said.
When the house alarm was triggered, the attacker fled.
Evidence that deputies collected from the crime scene led them to arrest 30-year-old James Hiles of Mentone, the news release said. Jail records show Hiles was booked on suspicion of rape by force. His bail is set at $250,000.
Hiles did not live in same mobile home park as the victim, and was not known to her, O'Connell said. Investigators did not find any signs of forced entry to the victim's house.
The Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information on the Jan. 16 incident or any other possible incidents involving Hiles to contact detectives at the Yucaipa Station at 909-918-2305. Tips can be submitted anonymously at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463) or at www.wetip.com.
