An Australian priest used the confessional box to admit abusing altar boys, believing he was reconciling his continued offending with God.
Another laughed after getting absolution, knowing the priest could not break the seal of confession.
Whether what is heard in the confessional should continue to stay in the confessional is one of the matters being considered by the child sex abuse royal commission as it again turns its focus to widespread offending in the Catholic Church in Australia.
Former Victorian priest Paul David Ryan, jailed in 2006 for 18 months for indecently assaulting one victim, revealed during a 2015 private hearing that he confessed his sexual activity with adolescent boys to his confessor on multiple occasions.
Asked if that was the way he reconciled his actions with God, he said: 'Yes. Well I thought I was. I know that was very seriously flawed.'
The body co-ordinating the church's response to the commission argues obligations to report child sexual abuse should not extend to divulging information in the confessional.
Truth Justice and Healing Council chief executive Francis Sullivan believed there was no public evidence before the commission of someone actually confessing a crime of child sex abuse under the seal of confession.
Alerted to Ryan's testimony by AAP, Mr Sullivan described it as an absolute abuse of the sacrament.
'If he's saying he's using the confessional as a way of alleviating his guilt so he can keep on abusing people, that's an absolute corruption of the use of the confessional and it's not what it's about.
'As a Catholic that's repulses me.'
The commission has also heard Melbourne pedophile Father Victor Gabriel Rubeo used a confessional situation to 'take out' his confessor, who had been alerted by one of the priest's victims.
'I gave absolution, and as he walked out the door he laughed at me,' former priest Philip O'Donnell told a 2015 hearing.
'In other words, he made sure that I couldn't speak to anyone. I felt totally entrapped by that situation.'
Mr Sullivan says it is up to the royal commission if it recommends changing privilege laws.
'If they do that and if governments change the law then priests like everybody else will need to either abide by the law and if they don't abide by the law they take the consequences.'
Over the next few weeks the royal commission will look at issues such as the sacrament of confession, celibacy, how priests and religious are selected, trained and supervised, and the church's structure and governance as it examines why child abuse was so prominent in Catholic institutions.
Victims' advocacy group Broken Rites spokesman Dr Wayne Chamley says answering why the abuse occurred is complex.
'It's certainly not just celibacy,' he said.
'I think what they'll get into is this whole process of religious formation where essentially people were depersonalised, so they no longer were capable of empathy.'
Dr Chamley said some of the religious orders were targeted by pedophiles.
'Two or three got in and said 'you can't believe how many kids we've got here' and then a few thought 'I'll become a brother or this or that as well'.'
Dr Chamley also points to systemic failures by agencies of the crown.
'All these kids put into institutional care - there were just no inspections.
'The church was such a trusted organisation, that none of their religious members could do any wrong.
'So there was systemic failure by police, by the department of family services, by all and sundry - absolutely, totally failed.'
The royal commission has received information about more than 4000 institutions but Mr Sullivan has acknowledged the Catholic Church is the single largest institutional setting in which children have been abused.
'It's terribly important in these three weeks that that phenomenon of the abuse of power, people abusing their positions of power and privilege, is explored. That means that clericalism is a really important factor here,' Mr Sullivan said.
In the lead-up to the final Catholic hearing, Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe again apologised for the church's shocking failures and the pain it caused so many.
'The prevalence of sexual abuse of children and young people in so many institutional settings in Australia, including the churches, indicates that there is a sickness at the heart of our nation which simply must be addressed,' Archbishop Costelloe said.
'This sickness has been particularly evident in the history of our own church and we must honestly and unflinchingly confront the reasons for this.'
Mr Sullivan argues the Catholic Church in Australia today is a very different place to that when most of the abuse examined by the commission took place.
But Dr Chamley questions how much has changed.
'I just see it as a state of anarchy. Priests don't abide by the rules and the bishops are not prepared to force them,' he said.
'I don't think it's changed.
'It took us 18 years to get a priest in Melbourne laicised. Eighteen years. Convicted pedophiles.'

Australian priest confesses to child abuse 5 February 2017

A Long Island farm owner and businessman has been accused of repeatedly raping his niece subjecting her to three years of abuse.

Steven Mezynieski, who was arrested and charged with sexual assault last August, has entered a not guilty plea to the charges.

The teenager says in the civil lawsuit filed in Suffolk County Supreme Court that the 44-year-old first sexually assaulted her when she was 15 years old on vacation in Punta Gorda in Florida, according to the New York Daily News

Mezynieski, who owns Driftwood Farms and the Steven Mezynieski, Inc., excavation firm, is also accused of using rope to restrain the teen in order to perform oral sex on her without consent.

That particular incident allegedly took place at the Driftwood Farms property that he purchased for $2million with his wife, Gretchen.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Thursday, alleges that the abuse took place between 2012 and 2014.

In the summer of 2014, he allegedly pushed the victim, then 18, onto a bed and forced her to have intercourse while she tried to fend him off, the court documents say.

'This man is a sick human being,' the girl's lawyer, Rosemarie Arnold, told the Daily News.

A young girl has been praised for her brave decision to come forward and expose the sex offending of an Adelaide child care worker.
Brenton Kelly Dickson has been jailed for five years after being found guilty of sexually exploiting the girl over several years.
His victim was only six when the offending began and District Court Judge Michael Boylan said she showed great courage in speaking out.
In his sentencing remarks on Thursday, Judge Boylan said he believed her when she said her life had been 'ruined'.
'She suffers a range of emotions owing to the crimes against her. Shame, anger, sadness, embarrassment and confusion,' the judge said.
'She lives in fear that she will come into contact with you again.
'She hopes one day to be a mother and she already fears for the safety of her children not yet born.'
The judge said Dickson's crimes would also impact other male teachers or carers in the community, and dissuade good men from wanting to work with children.
In the trial by judge alone, Dickson was found guilty on the one charge but acquitted on several others related to his conduct at an Adelaide school between 2007 and 2013.
The 36-year-old was suspended from his position in 2013 after he was seen washing an 11-year-old girl's legs.

Girl praised for exposing sex offender 3 February 2017

The child rape case of Toby Willis, former star of TLC’s reality show The Willis Clan, is set to finally begin after a fourth delay postponed the proceedings for several months. Though Willis was arrested for the rape of an underage girl nearly six months ago, a string of legal and out-of-court incidents has kept his trial from advancing to even a preliminary hearing. The most recent and longest delay, according to the Tennessean, came when Michael Shipman, Willis’ attorney, said he begun to “question [Willis’] competence” to stand trial, and asked that the judge grant a further stay so Willis could undergo a three-month mental evaluation.
The state’s attorneys objected to Shipman’s petition. And Judge Philip Maxey’s “patience [was] visibly tested” by the request. But the judge did agree that, “based on the seriousness of the crimes,” an evaluation would be in the best interests of both Toby Willis and the state’s case.
However, Judge Maxey reminded both attorneys that the ongoing delays were becoming a problem. “We’ve got to move this case along,” the judge said. “It’s been sitting too long already.”
Willis has remained imprisoned in Ashland City TN–approximately 20 miles west of Nashville–for the duration of the study, which is expected to conclude this month. His trial is now scheduled to begin March 1st.
Toby Willis’ current saga began last August, when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began investigating Toby based on information they received from a Willis family member. By September 9th, the Bureau had enough evidence to charge Toby, but he fled the state before officers could arrest him. He was later arrested in Greenville KY and extradited back to Tennessee; Toby Willis has been held without bail in the Cheatham County Jail since September 13.
The rape of which Willis is accused took place in 2002, when the child in question–a Willis family member–was either nine or ten years old.

Augustine Obono, 36, was arrested last month for abducting the girl and keeping her in his flat for two months. Police said the man repeatedly raped her before her escape. It is also alleged that he was trying to groom her for prostitution.
The State, led by advocate Andrew Mphaga, opposed his bail application. The investigating officer, Constable Mapule Mahlaba, submitted an affidavit detailing why the accused should be denied bail.
Mahlaba also indicated that she received a petition from an organisation called the Progressive Women’s Movement, with 261 signatures asking the court to deny bail.
According to the Citizen SA, the girl was walking to a nearby park to meet friends when she encountered an unknown woman who convinced her to go to the accused’s flat in Sunnyside.
The girl said she slept in the flat with the unknown woman with the understanding that she would return home the following day, but when she woke up the next morning the accused was sitting on the side of the bed next to her. The woman has since disappeared.
The applicant then forced the victim to make him money by prostituting herself and when the victim refused, the applicant assaulted her and raped her repeatedly,” the police reported.
He locked her up in the flat, sometimes without food, and supplied her with drugs. His plan was to get her addicted so he could control her.
"She eventually succumbed and worked for the applicant as a prostitute and handed the money received to the applicant.
She later escaped after Obono forgot to lock the door.
The girl's uncle refused to speak to the media, but indicated he would be available at the next court appearance.

Nigerian man charged with using 12-year- old girl as sex slave denied bail 09.01.2017 Obalolu Davies

A woman has stunned people with her unbelievable actions after helping her own husband to pin a girl down and forcefully have sex with her.

The Police in Zimbabwe have reportedly arrested a couple for kidnapping a 14-year-old girl. After kidnaping, the woman then proceeded to assist her husband to rape the minor by holding her hands

According to the state-owned Chronicle newspaper, Philemon Moyo Tauze, 30, and his wife Netsai Sibanda, 25, appeared before a court in Gweru facing charges of kidnapping and raping a minor. The two, from Mhike village in Zvishavane, pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody to February 13.

The court heard that Sibanda approached the girl and asked her if she could accompany her to her homestead where she promised to give her something “that she had kept for her”. The girl agreed, and on arrival Sibanda asked her if she could sleep over for the night, saying her husband would be away. But around 20:00, the husband showed up and the couple asked the girl to sleep with them in the same bedroom hut. During the night, Tauze started caressing the girl, who resisted, before Sibanda “grabbed and pinned her down”. Tauze went on to rape her.

Allentown police say a 46-year-old city man admitted to raping a child, according to Lehigh County Court records.
In addition to child rape, John Michael Achey Sr., of the 400 block of Green Street in Allentown, is also charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault.
Achey is in Lehigh County Jail under $100,000 bail.
On Dec. 21, Allentown police received a report of a possible child sex-abuse case. Police said the victim is an 11-year-old girl.
The girl was interviewed by police and said that Achey touched her and performed sex acts.
In an interview with police, Achey also admitted to sexual contact with the girl.

A MAN from Newton Abbot has appeared at Exeter Crown Court accused of sexually abusing two children, writes a crown court correspondent.
Damien Treavartha, aged 34, was not required to enter a plea when he appeared before Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, by video link from Bristol prison.
The judge adjourned the case for a month, during which police will continue to carry out further inquiries and Treavartha will have a chance to give instructions to his lawyers.
Mr Nicolas Gerasimidis, prosecuting, said the contents of a phone are being examined and it is possible Treavartha may be interviewed about further alleged offences.
Treavartha, of Bowden Hill, Newton Abbot, is currently facing one charge of rape and one of sexual assault, which relate to two complainants, aged nine and ten.
He was remanded in custody until March 2. No application was made for bail.
