A Tiffin teenager pleaded guilty to a sex charge during a hearing in Seneca County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Kelbley’s courtroom Wednesday morning.
Bryce J. Snyder, 19, pleaded guilty to a charge of rape, a first-degree felony, for behavior involving an 11-year-old girl.
It was a lesser-included offense compared to Snyder’s original charge due to the removal of an age specification. There was no force or threat of force, said Stephanie Reed, assistant Seneca County prosecutor.
The joint sentence recommendation is Snyder serve a mandatory prison term of nine years. He would be classified as a Tier III sex offender.
Frank Marley, Snyder’s attorney, requested a pre-sentence report. Sentencing was scheduled for 2 p.m. March 14.
Two others were charged in December.
Jaron M. Burns, 18, of Tiffin, pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape, a first-degree felony, and Matthew A. Perry, 20, of Tiffin, pleaded not guilty to a charge of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony.
The case involves separate acts with the same girl, according to Seneca County Prosecutor’s Office.

A Chehalis man who pleaded guilty to raping two girls for years, starting when they were 5 years old, was sentenced to spend at least 13 years and as much as life in prison for the crimes.
Conlan M. Craig, 20, of Chehalis, was sentenced Wednesday to at least 160 months and up to life in prison as determined by Washington’s Indeterminate Sentence Review Board, because he was convicted of a Class A sex offense.
Craig pleaded guilty Dec. 14 to one count each of first- and second-degree rape of a child.
The standard sentencing range for first-degree rape is 120 to 160 months, with the possibility of more time in custody from the ISRB.
“We do believe the high end is appropriate,” said Deputy Prosecutor Melissa Bohm,
Bohm read statements from the two victims in the case, in which the girls said Craig had an “indescribable effect” on their lives.
“I blocked most of my childhood out of my memory,” one victim wrote.
Craig was charged in August 2016 on suspicion of raping the two girls starting when they were 5 years old after they reported the abuse to an adult. At the time of the report, the girls were 12 and 14.
According to court documents, Craig sexually assaulted one girl about six times, and the other over a period of time of approximately six years.
Craig allegedly admitted to abusing the girls and was arrested, according to court documents.
“You destroyed us in the worst of ways,” wrote the second victim.
Craig hung his head throughout the proceeding, and did not make a statement when given the opportunity.
Defense attorney David Arcuri asked for the lower end of the sentence — 120 months — asking Judge Joely O’Rourke to take into account the fact that Craig pleaded guilty, sparing the victims the trauma of reliving the abuse in a trial.
“It is no slap on the wrist. It’s 10 years in prison,” Arcuri said.
Before handing down a sentence, O’Rourke noted that Craig could have faced additional charges and aggravating factors if Arcuri had not negotiated a more favorable plea deal.
“I think it should be recognized that you are taking responsibility for your actions,” she said “However, given the impact this had on the victims, and the years this went on, I am going to impose the maximum. I think it is appropriate given the impact on the victims.”
Craig was given credit for 192 days in custody.

Court: Victims Say They Were Sexually Abused Over the Course of Several Years

A Portage man is facing charges with a potential sentence adding up to more than a century if he is convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
“You don’t give me a whole lot of reason to not give you a cash bond,” Columbia County Circuit Court Commissioner Charles Church told 18-year-old James Brown Jr. during an initial appearance Wednesday afternoon.
Charged with first-degree sexual assault of a child under 16, child enticement, possession of child pornography and false imprisonment, Brown was unable provide a current address, telling the court that he had been evicted from his last known residence on Oneida Street, but has friends in the area.
Assistant District Attorney Carl Knepel requested Brown held on a $1,000 cash bond.
The charges stemmed from a call to the Portage Police Department on Jan. 21, reporting a sexual assault in December. The officer met a 15-year-old girl, who reportedly told him that she contacted the police after a report at her school didn’t seem to go anywhere.
The girl told the officer that on Dec. 3 she had been at Brown’s apartment, drinking with some other friends. When the other friends went to their apartment to smoke pot, she told the officer, the two began making out.
Brown then allegedly wanted to go further, with her saying that she didn’t want to, and Brown persisting.
The girl told the officer that she was either too drunk or too weak to push Brown off of her, with the incident going on over several hours and her passing out before Brown went to sleep. She left the next morning.
On the morning of Jan. 26, Brown met with a Portage detective about the incident, admitting that he had been with the girl that night, that they drank together and that they went to bed together, but denied taking away her clothes and phone so she couldn’t leave.

During the interview, the detective showed Brown texts between him and the girl, outlined in court documents, in which Brown appears surprised that something went wrong while they were together, then apologetic as she tells him in no uncertain terms what happened and the trauma that she suffered, including having a panic attack at the smell of Chill Cologne.
“Please don’t drink anymore,” the girl texted, “And try to understand the word stop and no.”
“I thought it was part of what we were doing,” he replied.
“No. It’s what you wanted. Not what I wanted.”
The detective also reported finding four pictures of the girl on the phone, including two topless photographs.
Brown told the detective that taking the texts into consideration, he wanted to reconsider some of the information he had given, that he had been scared by the texts from the girl, whom he said had made false accusations against other people in the past.
Following Wednesday’s hearing, Brown was taken into custody, held on $500 cash bond, ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim and no unsupervised contact with underage girls.
Brown is scheduled to next appear in court for a return hearing on April 7.

  • Stony Brook Seawolves guard Blair Mendy was charged with third-degree rape, sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child Wednesday, per Ellen Yan and Steven Marcus of Newsday.
Yan and Marcus cited university police Chief Robert J. Lenahan when reporting on the 22-year-old's charge of the rape of a minor.
Lenahan didn't comment on the victim's age in the alleged crime.
Mendy's father did comment in a phone interview, per Yan and Marcus: "I think my kid was raised very well. I find it very incredible to believe. I taught him to be a gentleman, treat ladies well. I always taught him to make the right choice."
  • This is not the first recent issue with the law for the Seawolves basketball team. According to Yan and Marcus, three other players were arrested during the 10 months before Mendy's charges.
  • In April, Rayshaun McGrew and DeShaun Thrower were both charged with third-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal mischief. Then the team suspended Ahmad Walker after he was charged with second-degree harassment and resisting arrest in September.
Yan and Marcus noted Mendy—who is a sophomore and has appeared in two games this season—"is expected to be arraigned Thursday."

COVENTRY TOWNSHIP, Ohio - An 18-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly raping three of his relatives in a Coventry Township home.
In January, the Summit County Sheriff's Office received information that children were being sexually abused in the home.
When detectives responded, they found nine children living in "deplorable" conditions. Authorities said there was evidence of hoarding, mental health concerns, multiple reports of sex offenses, abuse allegations and neglect complaints.
The children were then removed from the home.
After further investigation, the sheriff's office determined that 18-year-old Cody Haupt was sexually abusing three of his relatives — a 5-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy.
On Feb. 8, officers arrested Haupt and charged him with three counts of rape.
More charges are pending.

Twin Falls, Idaho: Idaho judge has ordered a 19-year-old convicted rapist not to have sex with anyone before he marries.
Judge's order came after Cody Duane Scott Herrera pleaded guilty to statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl.
Judge Randy Stoker sentenced Herrera of Twin Falls to five to 15 years in prison, but he suspended the sentence for a one-year rider program.
If the unmarried Herrera completes the program, he'll be released on probation, which requires celibacy unless he weds. Herrera received the sentence in 5th District Court.
While delivering the order, District Judge Randy Stoker said, “I have never seen that level of sexual activity by a 19-year-old.”
The victim’s mother termed Herrera was a predator.
“It was his intent from the beginning to take what he wanted from my 14-year-old child — her virginity,” the victim’s mother told the court.

Idaho judge punishes 19-year-old rape convict with 'no sex for a year' order Zee Media Bureau February 8, 2017

Idaho Judge Randy Stoker recently ruled that Cody Herrera, a man convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl, could be released on probation under the rarely enforced state law that he not engage in sex outside marriage for its duration. In his decision, he mused that the rape probably happened because of “social media.”
The Guardian reports that Judge Stoker took the delivery of his sentence as an opportunity to lecture everyone in the courthouse about how, if he could, he would “eliminate the internet”:
“I have seen dozens, if not hundreds of sex cases since I’ve been on this bench,” the jurist said. “Our society has come to a point of, I don’t even know how to explain it, you know? I am 66 years of age. When I was 19 years of age, the sexual proclivities of young people wasn’t anything, anything like I see today.
I think it is a direct consequence of the social media system that we have in this country,” Stoker continued. “I can’t tell you how many times I have seen these cases, ‘How did this happen?’ ‘Well, I met somebody on social media’.”
Herrera met the unnamed victim in 2015. They hung out together with friends and communicated via Facebook after the girl’s mother attempted to put a stop to the relationship. The girl invited Herrera over to her house to watch a movie in March of that year. He started to fondle her, she told him to stop, and then he raped her without a condom.
In court, Herrera claimed to have had sex with 34 people, and, according to The Guardian felt he could “use young children for sexual gratification.” Herrera’s abidance to his abstinence sentence will be tested by polygraph, and he has been threatened with a full 15 year stay in prison if he breaks those terms.

Judge Blames Rape of 14-Year-Old Girl On Social Media Aimée Lutkin Feb 08 2017

LOWELL -- A 21-year-old Lowell man with a history of mental-health issues was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail after Lowell police accused him of raping and abusing his girlfriend's then 3-yr-old daughter then seeking police to allegedly confess to the crimes and give them a notebook filled with the details.
In Lowell District Court on Monday, Soboran "Bobby" Tep, 21, who has been living at the homeless shelter at 189 Middlesex St., Lowell, was also ordered to undergo a competency evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital after pleading not guilty to charges of: aggravated statutory child rape; assault and battery (two counts), assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a child under 14 and threats.
His next court date is Feb. 24.
Lowell police allege that around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, a Lowell police officer on routine patrol was flagged down on Gorham Street by Tep. He allegedly told the officer, "I want to confess something," then indicated he raped his now ex-girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter while she was in the shower with her mother.
Tep allegedly told the police that the child "looked like she wanted him" to touch her.
There was another alleged incident when Tep sexually assaulted the child while he was driving a car, police allege. He also confessed that he started physically abusing the child by whipping her with a cord when she wouldn't listen to him, according to police.
Aside from his verbal confession, Tep said he wrote it all down in a notebook, which he turned over to police.
The incidents allegedly took place in the mother's Lowell apartment over the summer when the child was 3.
At the same time that Tep was talking to the police, Tep's girlfriend, who is the child's mother, went to the Lowell Police Station to report the same allegations, according to prosecutor Megan McGovern.
The mother, who has mental-health issues, told police she dated Tep for about a month. During that time, he was physically and sexually abusive toward her and her daughter, she alleges. The mother indicated she was afraid of Tep and was granted on July 15 a temporary restraining order against Tep that was extended for one year.
At the request of defense attorney Thomas Combs, Lowell District Court clinician Dr. Ryan Brimigion, provided a preliminary competency evaluation of Tep. Brimigion told Judge Thomas Brennan after Tep's arrest he was exhibiting psychotic symptoms, such as hearing voices telling him to kill himself and others, so he was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital over the weekend.
In the Lowell District Court lockup, Tep appeared to be "confused, suspicious and preoccupied,'' Brimigion said. Tep said he had been suffering from mental-health issues since age 4 and that he had been hospitalized at psychiatric hospitals in Chicago, Nebraska and Minnesota.
Brimigion recommended a further competency evaluation at a Massachusetts psychiatric hospital.

Wilton man accused of forcibly raping 16-year-old girl

ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - Adonis Jackson, 18, has been charged with 11 counts of possession and production of child pornography, as well as second-degree rape.
It’s not a typical case of child pornography. In fact, most of the five victims were Jackson’s friends and classmates. In this case, age is the issue. The victims were 16 years old or younger – fitting the statute for the charges.
A second-degree rape charge stemmed from a relationship with a female under the age of 16. Court documents allege Jackson had sex with the victim at Wetumpka High School. This investigation and subsequent search of Jackson’s cell phone turned up images of the other victims.
Court documents show Jackson received the images through Facetime and Snapchat and took screen shots of the pictures, which were saved on his phone.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Mandy Johnson said the issue doesn’t end with the victims' ages. It’s how Jackson used the images to exploit them.
“That was our main problem,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t just one victim. It wasn’t just two victims. He was doing the same thing over and over again. When the victims stopped doing what he wanted, he threatened to expose them on social media and threatened to expose them.”
Jackson's attorney, Susan James, calls the charges a reach, stating the victims sent Jackson the images, a far cry from production of child pornography.
Johnson anticipates more victims will be added to the case as investigators work to identify the females in the pictures from Jackson’s phone. She warns parents this is an ongoing issue in the 19th Judicial Circuit.
“One bad decision can affect your child for the rest of their life,” Johnson warned. “Nothing is ever deleted forever. All it takes is a subpoena, and we can get that information. That is something parents need to stress to their kids, just because you think its deleted doesn’t mean it’s erased. These things can come back to haunt them.”
It's a message Johnson and her colleagues carry to schools in Elmore, Autauga and Chilton counties.
Be aware, be involved in your children’s lives, and monitor their social media,” Johnson explained. “Talk to them about this problem - not talking about the problem is not the solution.”
Elmore County District Judge Glenn Goggans bound the new counts over to be considered by a grand jury.
Jackson remains in the Elmore County Detention Facility.
MORRISTOWN -- A 23-year-old man who was convicted in November for his role in the gang rape of an intoxicated teen girl in 2011, was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in state prison, authorities said.

Aquil Malik, of Orange, was found guilty after a jury trial of two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and one count of second-degree sexual assault, Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp and Morristown Police Chief Peter Demnitz said in a news release.

Malik was 17 when he participated in the rape on Sept. 4, 2011 of a 17-year-old girl who was too drunk to consent, authorities have said.

Malik met the intoxicated girl at a social gathering in Morristown, and, after she asked to be taken home, Malik and two others took her to an isolated area and raped her while she was in and out of consciousness, authorities said.

When the girl became aware of what was happening, she told Malik to stop but he refused, they said.

Malik and Dequan McDaniel were both initially charged as juveniles but they were later waived up to adult court. Tyrec Phillips, the third defendant, was 18 at the time of the rape and charged as an adult.

According to the Daily Record, McDaniel and Phillips both pleaded guilty in 2015 to conspiracy and aggravated sexual contact, and were each sentenced to one year probation.

Man convicted in gang rape of drunk teen sentenced to 10 years Justin Zaremba February 09, 2017

A man is facing jail for raping a teenager in a canalside attack filmed by a witness.

Rodrigues Fortes-Gomes, 19, of Gorton, denied rape charges but was convicted after a Manchester Crown Court trial.

His friend Orlando Machado, 19, of Moston, was also accused of rape after having sex with the young woman in the same incident.

But Mr Machado was cleared of all charges after telling the jury the 18-year-old complainant had propositioned him and was making ‘sounds of pleasure’ during their encounter.

The incident - by the Rochdale Canal at Ducie Street - was witnessed by a man who was woken by noises outside his flat at 6.45am on July 23.
The witness took a cameraphone recording which captured both men engaging in sex acts with the young woman. She can be heard groaning in the footage - in between saying ‘stop’, ‘it’s not fair’ and ‘it’s not right’.
The man broke off from the recording to call police.
Gomes, who carried on having sex with her after Machado had finished, fled as sirens approached but was arrested further down the canal.
The complainant had been out in the Gay Village with two friends in the hours before, and all three had been ‘drinking significant quantities of alcohol’, the court heard.
The woman, who consumed lager, vodka and poppers, a legal drug, stayed in the club after her two friends went home and ended up being removed from the AXM club by a bouncer at 5.10am after falling asleep.
She spent some time slumped on the pavement outside the venue before she started chatting with another clubber, who she went with to Burger King at Piccadilly.
There, the complainant ended up chatting to Mr Machado and Mr Gomes, who had also been out in the Gay Village.
The trio decided to ‘go and have a smoke’ and left Burger King at 6.15am, jurors were told. They spent some time lying on a bench in Picadilly Gardens before going down Ducie Street to a footpath by the Rochdale Canal.
The prosecution argued during the case that while the victim may have ‘fancied’ Orlando Machado, she had not consented a threesome involving his friend Gomes on the banks of the canal in broad daylight, and could repeatedly be heard saying saying ‘stop’.
The court heard a defence argument that the victim had been 'loudly' asking for sex when the men met her in Burger King.
Rodrigues Fortes-Gomes will be sentenced on February 23.
Port Elizabeth – A 22-year-old man on Monday, detailed to the Port Elizabeth High Court how he "violently" raped a 14-year-old girl and murdered her after her screams for help had agitated him.
The trial against Andre Tieman got underway on Monday where he pleaded guilty to charges of rape, murder and theft.
Tieman was convicted accordingly following his guilty plea.
In April last year, 14-year-old Micaylen Hendricks of Uitenhage mysteriously went missing after he mother had sent her to a nearby shop to buy nappies for her younger sibling.
According to the State, Tieman saw the teenager, a grade six learner, walking and lured the teenager to his shack by telling her a "lie" – that he had her mother's cellphone in his possession. Defence attorney Robin O'Brien read Tieman's guilty plea, in which he admitted to strangling Hendricks until she could no longer breathe.
"After I killed her, I wrapped her in a blanket and covered her with a ceiling board and placed her under the window. I then went to smoke dagga," the plea read.
After the killing, Tieman stole the teenager's Nokia cellphone valued at R600.
After an intensive search, police discovered her body a week later in Tieman's shack in the Moegesukkel informal settlement. Community members were outraged by the incident and burnt down Tieman's shack.
In aggravation of sentence the State called the teenager's father, Milton Ludick, who described his child as a shy girl who loved church.
Ludick who showed little emotion, said that he had known Tieman for a long time and had asked him if he had heard anything about his daughter's disappearance to which Tieman denied any knowledge.
Investigating Officer Sergeant Benjamin van Wyk explained to the court how when police discovered the teenagers body in Tieman's shack, it had already started to decompose.
State Prosecutor Garth Baartman argued that Tieman's guilty plea should be taken with a "pinch of salt". He asked for the minimum sentence of life imprisonment to be imposed and said that Tieman showed no remorse.
Baartman said that Tieman never handed himself over to police and he had no choice than to plead guilty as the evidence against him was too strong after being found in possession of the teenager's cellphone.
Judge Irma Schoeman is expected to pass down sentence on Tuesday.

The Tangerang District Court sentenced Rahmat Arifin, 24, and Imam Hapriadi, 24, to death on Wednesday for the rape and murder of EF, 19, in Kosambi, Tangerang regency last year.
“The court sentences the defendants, Rahmat Arifin and Imam Hapriadi, to death as demanded by the prosecutors,” presiding judge Irfan Siregar read out the verdict as reported by
Arifin was charged under Article 340 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on premeditated murder and Article 285 on rape, while Imam was charged only under Article 340, which carries the death penalty.

Irfan said the defendants had been proven guilty of premeditated murder without any mitigating factors that would have warranted a lesser sentence.

According to facts revealed during the trial, the events of the murder started when another convict, RA, who was 16-year-old when the case occurred, went to a factory worker dormitory where the victim lived. RA, who had been acquainted with EP for one month, reportedly asked EP to have sex with him, but she refused. Angered, RA left the room and met two other males, Rahmat and Imam. The three forced their way into the room, gang raped EF and then used a hoe to kill her in a particularly gruesome manner.

RA was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in June last year. His sentence was lighter because he was a juvenile. (fac/dmr)
