Three women reported being raped in separate incidents after encountering suspects on St. Charles Avenue, where the Uptown parade route runs, during the final three days of the Mardi Gras season, New Orleans police said.
They were among eight women or girls who reported rapes in unrelated incidents between Feb. 19 and Mardi Gras (Feb. 28), the department said.
One of the women told police she was raped by an unknown man who found her at an Uptown parade, forced her into a car and drove her to a college dorm where he sexually attacked her. Another case included a woman who reported her 11-year-old daughter had been assaulted when the girl was 5.
NOPD spokesman Aaron Looney said all of the incidents remain under investigation.
3 separate rapes tied to Uptown parade route
Police said the first report of a rape near the Uptown parade route came the Sunday before Mardi Gras, when a 17-year-old young woman told officers that three days earlier, Feb. 23, a 16-year-old "male acquaintance" sexually assaulted her near the intersection of St. Charles Avenue and Amelia Street.
Police classified the incident as first-degree rape. Citing a police report, Looney said the victim told police she did not want to press charges against the suspect.
Also on Sunday (Feb. 26), a 19-year-old woman reported to police she was raped earlier in the night by a man she met on St. Charles Avenue, NOPD said. Citing an NOPD report, Looney said the victim told police she was with friends on St. Charles Avenue around 7:30 p.m. when she "met an unknown male." She and the man then "traveled a few blocks away," where the victim said he sexually assaulted her, Looney said.
The incident was classified as first-degree rape. The victim described the suspect as 5-foot-11 tall with "medium black hair," and a clean-shaven face.
Man forced woman into car at parade, then raped her
The last of the three reported attacks connected to St. Charles Avenue came on Mardi Gras, when a 20-year-old woman told police an unknown man approached her at a parade, forced her into a car and drove her to a college campus dorm where he raped her, Looney said citing a police report.
The rape was reported around 4:18 p.m. Feb. 28, a preliminary report said. The woman told police she was at a parade at the intersection of St. Charles Avenue and St. Joseph Street, about a block from Lee Circle in the downtown direction. After the man approached her, "she said the male forced her into a white vehicle and drove to an unknown dorm apartment on a college campus, where the victim said the male sexually assaulted her." The incident was classified as first-degree rape.
After the assault, the victim told police, the man drove her to the intersection of Leon C. Simon Drive and Elysian Fields Avenue near the Lakefront, where she got out the vehicle. The suspect then fled, police said. The victim described her attacker as 6-feet tall with black dreadlocks.
Here is a synopsis of the other five rapes reported in the 10 final days of Carnival:
Out-of-town teen reports being raped by friend at hotel
An 18-year-old woman Feb. 19 reported to police she was sexually assaulted by a "male friend" at their hotel room, after accompanying him to New Orleans. Looney did not say when the victim said the assault occurred. The incident was classified as first-degree rape.
A preliminary report listed the location as Rampart Street at the edge of the French Quarter, but it's unclear if that is where the victim said the assault occurred, according to Looney.
Woman raped in NOPD's 3rd District
A 22-year-old woman reported to police the afternoon of Feb. 26 that she was sexually assaulted earlier that day by a male acquaintance. A preliminary police report said the rape occurred at an unknown location in NOPD's 3rd District, which polices the Lakefront area and parts of Mid-City and Gentilly. The incident was classified as first-degree rape. NOPD spokeswoman Dawne Massey said the assault occurred outside or in a car.
Mother reports 11-year-old daughter's rape
The mother of an 11-year-old girl reported to police on Feb. 26 that her daughter told her a "known male relative" sexually assaulted the 11-year-old when she was 5. Looney, citing a police report, said the victim also disclosed "two other incidents" that she said occurred between September 2014 and May 2015 at undisclosed locations.
The location listed in the police report was Eunice Drive in New Orleans East, though it's unclear if that's where the assaults occurred. No other information was given to police at the time, Looney said.
Mother reports teen daughter's rape
The mother of a 17-year-old young woman reported to police Feb. 27 that her daughter told her a man sexually assaulted the teen about noon the previous day outside her residence. The listed location of the incident, which was classified as first-degree rape, was on D'Abadie Street in the 7th Ward.
Woman reports multiple sexual assaults
A 21-year-old woman on Mardi Gras reported to police she had been sexually assaulted by "a known male acquaintance" since Christmas Day.
"The victim advised she would go into details about the incidents at a later date," the report said. The location of the report, which was classified as first-degree rape, was listed as Texas Drive in Algiers, though police did not say if that is the place where the woman said the assaults occurred.
