A former Craven County middle school teacher is being held on $5 million in bonds on accusations that he has committed serial rapes, including in Onslow County.
Kevin Courtney Smith, 45, of Sherman Point Road in New Bern was charged Thursday by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office with felony second degree forcible sex offense; felony assault by strangulation; felony crime against nature; and two counts of larceny.
The charges were for crimes committed in Onslow County, along with charges from Jan. 13 for felony first degree rape, felony assault by strangulation, felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, felony first degree sex offense; and felony crime against nature.
Smith is accused in Onslow County of raping and assaulting a 23-year-old woman, an incident that was reported on April 27, said Col. Donnie Worrell with the sheriff’s office.
All of the charges in Onslow County pertain to one incident, Worrell said.
Smith has been in Craven County Jail since Dec. 18, said Craven County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Michael Sawyer. He was taken into custody as part of a sting operation. He was lured by a Greenville prostitute to a James City hotel after the Craven County Sheriff’s Office began investigating claims that a man contacting prostitutes through the Back Page website was meeting them at hotels where he raped and stole from them, the New Bern Sun Journal previously reported.
Additional charges for Smith include patronizing a prostitute; intimidating a state witness; two counts of first degree forcible rape; two counts of common law robbery; and obstructing justice.
Smith has court dates scheduled in Onslow County on March 16 and May 23 and a court date scheduled in Craven County for April 7, according to N.C. Courts.
Smith is a former teacher in Craven County at H.J. Macdonald Middle School and West Craven High School.
Law enforcement believes there may be additional victims who have not come forward yet and encouraged them to do so by calling the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office at 910-455-3113 or the Craven County Sheriff’s Office at 252-636-6643.
Sawyer said law enforcement wants the information out to the public in order to locate other potential victims.
“As more victims come forward, there’ll be more charges if there’s a basis for it,” Sawyer said.
The investigation is ongoing; and Smith is still in custody in Craven County, Sawyer said.
